Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about self-employed tax filing
What qualifies as self-employed income?
Self-employed income includes freelance earnings, contract work, gig economy income (Uber, DoorDash, etc.), consulting fees, and revenue from any unincorporated business you operate. All are reported on the T2125 form.
Do I need to charge GST/HST?
If your business revenue exceeds $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register for and charge GST/HST. We can help you determine if registration is required and manage your filings.
What records should I keep for CRA?
You should maintain all invoices, receipts, bank statements, mileage logs, and home office calculations. CRA requires you to keep records for at least 6 years from the end of the tax year.
Do I need to make instalment payments?
If you owe more than $3,000 in net tax in the current year and in either of the two preceding years, CRA may require quarterly instalment payments. We help you calculate and plan for these.
